13 Things That Will Save You Money Today
- Hang your clothes instead of using the dryer. At this phase of life, I only use the dryer for towels, washcloths, blankets (big items that have to go in a dryer. I hang everything else up to air dry. This also saves time as I don’t have to dry items and later on put them on hangers.
- Make your coffee at home-. I purchased a Starbucks Coffee maker a few years back on sale and I love it. Bed, Bathy & Beyond will typically have the pods on sale- add the 20% coupon and I’m making the same drink that costs $4.95 at Starbucks for less than $1 a cup.
- Exercise at home. As a blogger, I spend a ton of time sitting behind my computer. I make it a point at the top of every hour to get up and walk up and down my stairs 10x. I hula hoop for 30 min a day. I walk my neighborhood 3x a week. I’ve recently implemented walking our dog every morning at the crack of dawn.
- Drink water vs. soda or juice. Aside from the fact that it’s more healthy, you can save a ton of money. In addition, stop buying individual bottled water. You can purchase a filter for your faucet and refill water bottles that you have. If you still insist on buying water then consider buying the large refillable containers – A 2-gallon jug may cost $2 to refill vs. a case of water for $5.99.
- Make your own cleaning supplies. Vinegar and water will go a long way. I’m currently phasing out all my over-the-counter cleaning supplies. When I do purchase, I typically purchase lavender/vinegar for cleaning (and it’s food-grade- no harsh chemicals)
- Turn off all lights and appliances that don’t have to be left on. My microwave is on a dedicated light switch- hence it gets turned off when I leave. In my office, my TV and printers are on a power surge protector. I turn it off when I leave my office. Shut your computer off at night (this is a money drain).
- Change out your old lightbulbs for LED bulbs.
- Invest in a home garden kit and grow your own herbs – I absolutely love the one I have. When you figure out how much it costs to purchase natural herbs, it is so worth it.
- Always pay more than the minimum on credit card and student loan debts
- Shop the farmers market if you have one in your area. I purchase my salt, pepper, and spices from the farmers market. You have no idea how much money you waste on spices until you begin to purchase from the farmers market. Believe me, you can get a large natural container and share with a friend for pennies, vs, spending $5 on a tiny bottle.
- If you have an extra room, consider renting it out. I happen to reside in a 6 bedroom home. I’ve rented rooms out on a regular basis.
- Eat what is currently in your pantry. Don’t allow food to expire. It is the same as throwing money in the trash. Groceries are at the top of the expense list.
- Make your own smoothies – I love Arden Garden which specializes in smoothies & juices. I have a top of the line blender, hence there is no reason that I can’t make my smoothies in house. Purchase a few bags of Dole Frozen fruit and you are in business and saving an average of $6 per smoothie drink.
Saving money should not be difficult. The most difficult thing is in fact getting started. In order to survive what the world is currently facing, you will need to get started.
10 More Money Saving Ideas
- Get Rid of Cable– There are so many other options. Do your research and figure out what works best for you. If you have access to wi-fi, you can, for the most part, watch almost everything online. Here are what a few services are charging monthly
Netflix $7.99- 15.99
Hulu- $5.99- $39.99
Amazon Prime Video – $8.99 (requires Prime Subscription, which is $119 per year)
Sling TV – $20-$40
HBO Now – $14.99
YouTube TV – $40+ - Start a budget. It’s imperative that you create a budget. Do not allow the thought of creating a budget to overwhelm you. It’s hard to save money when you have no idea as to where your money is being spent.
- Switch Banks. Find a bank that does not have monthly fees. With an average monthly fee of $10, that is $120 a year in savings.
- Weatherproof your home. Take the time to weatherproof and repair items in your home. You are letting money float away when you don’t repair broken windows etc. Make sure your chimney flue is closed as warm air rises and will rise up and out of the chimney.
- Meal Prep for the week. Meal prepping will not only cut down on your grocery bill, but it will also cut down on your utilities as well.
- Buy in Bulk. There are some items that are worth buying in bulk and buying a few when they are on sale. I only shop items that are buy-one-get-one (BOGO) free. I very rarely purchase items full price.
- Do a 30 day no spend challenge. You will be amazed at what you can save when you intentionally set out to not spend money.
- Sign up for Cash Back Apps. This is a huge money saver and you save money while you go about your everyday living. Apps such as Dosh, Ibotta, Rakuten, and a few others enable you to earn cashback for items that you are going to purchase anyway and for referring friends to use the apps.
- Pack your lunch. When I worked for the feds I still packed my lunch. Yes, I made over 6 figures and I still packed my lunch daily. Wednesdays were the only day that I would treat myself out with co-workers and even then I was prone to bringing my lunch.
- Couponing. Learn to coupon. I know ladies that literally pay $5 a month for all their groceries. We’ve all seen the show with the extreme couponers. Imagine getting $400 worth of groceries and paying less than $10 for everything. Clipping a few coupons is worth every penny. The old saying goes, a penny saved is a penny earned.
